Aplication of uranium isotopes as tracers in ground water studies (Bambui - Bahia, Brazil)
Description
Analyses of 234U/238U activity ratios and the uranium concentration in 42 underground water samples have provided better in formation about the recharge area and the flow direction in the Bambui limestone, Bahia (Brazil). In the main recharge area, the activity ratios were found to range from 3 to 6 and the uranium concentration averaged 1 μg/l. The activity ratio increases northward with the highest values close to 10. The 234U excess from a basic of ratio of activity (fundamental leaching ratio) also increases northward in agreement with the age of the water, an observation confirmed by C-14. This 234U excess is attributed to the alpha-recoil process. The system was calibrated and the age of the waters in the calcareous region was determined. (Author)

Analises da razao de atividade 234U/238U e concentracao de uranio, em 42 amostras de agua subterranea, permitiram uma melhor definicao de areas de recarga e direcoes de fluxo no calcario Bambui, Bahia. Valores de razao de atividade na faixa 3-6 e concentracao de uranio de ordem de 1 μg/l sao caracteristicas da principal area de recarga. A partir desta area, ha um continuo aumento da razao de atividade na direcao norte, atingindo um valor maximo em torno de 10. O excesso de 234U a partir de uma razao de atividade base (razao de lixiviacao fundamental) aumenta tambem na direcao norte, de acordo com a idade da agua, confirmado pelos dados de C-14. Este excesso de 234U e atribuido ao processo de recuo alfa. Foi possivel, assim, calibrar o sistema e determinar a idade de muitas aguas da regiao calcaria. (Autor)Files
