Description

One of the advantages of a water-cooled fusion reactor is the large heat-sink provided by the coolant following a loss of normal heat sink - a condition that would arise following a loss of on-site and off-site power. With a typical coolant inventory of more than 300 Mg of water in the primary side of the cooling system alone, and a similar amount in the secondary side, a significant period of time is required to boil-off the entire inventory. This design feature ensures that significant overheating will not occur for several days following a loss of electrical power. (orig.)
