Black blood MRI. Misinterpretation of enhancing veins as active MS foci

Description
In patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), contrast-enhancing lesions in MRI indicate the degree of activity of the disease, which has a direct impact on therapy. The authors hypothesized that sequences in which the blood flow is shown in dark (black-blood technique) have an increased risk of misdiagnosis, as accumulations of normal intraparenchymal veins can be misinterpreted.
Abstract (German)
Bei Patienten mit Multipler Sklerose (MS) zeigen kontrastmittelaufnehmende Läsionen in der MRT den Aktivitätsgrad der Erkrankung an, was eine direkte Auswirkung auf die Therapie hat. Die Autoren stellten die Hypothese auf, dass Sequenzen, bei denen der Blutfluss dunkel dargestellt wird (Black-Blood-Technik), ein erhöhtes Risiko für Fehldiagnosen aufweisen, da Anreicherungen normaler intraparenchymaler Venen fehlinterpretiert werden können.
