Detection of interstellar lithium in the direction of 55 Cygni
Description
The x6708 line of Li I has been detected in the interstellar spectrum of 55 Cyg with a strength of 5.2 j 0.8 mA equivalent width. Determination of the ionization equllibrium from observations of Ca I X4226 and Ca ii H and K yields a column density N(Li) = 3.4 X 10' . Comparison with the Ca, Fe I, and H abundance in this direction indicates that the heavy elements are depleted with respect to their solar system abundance but not as strongly as in the direction of Oph. No 7Li/6Li ratio could be determined. Subject headings: abundances - interstellar matter - spectrophotometry
