Stability of caverns in rocksalt mines with vertically quarried chambers
Description
By developing a computer code based on a finite element formulation, the time dependend material behaviour of underground salt rock struktures can be investigated. Therefore the material laws have to be adapted consistently to the finite element method. For the numerical model salt domes and the surrounding rock can be discretizised by coupling the finite- and the boundary element method. With that the viscoplastic behaviour of salt rock and the elastic behaviour of the cape rock and the surrounding rock can be taken account for. The presented method enables a prediction of displacements and stresses in salt rock regarding salt caverns. Computations of the stability of a salt mine with three 150 m tall quarried chambers, one upon the other, in a depth of up to 900 m conclude the investigations. Among others, the influence of stabilizing strata in the salt dome, of the overthrust mountain and the surrounding rock and of backfilling materials are shown. The results of plane-strain models are compared to those of a three-dimensional model. The far reaching influence of steep and tall cavities in salt rock is shown and the right choice of material laws becomes obvious. (orig./HS)
