Himeji compact torus injection experiment
Description
Recently, there has been growing interest in the fusion applications of a compact torus (CT) plasma to current drive and refueling for tokamaks. The CT injection experiment, as developing from the FACT gun-spheromak experiment, has started first at Himeji Institute of Technology. The main purposes of the CT injection experiment are to develop the CT injector in order to achieve the deep penetration fueling and the steady-state current drive of a tokamak and to examine the dynamics of a CT plasma injected into the low-aspect-ratio tokamak-like fields. Of most interest here, is the interaction (magnetic reconnection process) between the CT magnetic fields and the strong toroidal field of tokamak. To demonstrate the CT injection into a tokamak-like plasma, the authors have improved the FACT spheromak device to the low-aspect-ratio tokamak one by superposing the external toroidal field Bt.e. They will report about the penetrating behavior of the CT plasma in this tokamak-like configuration plasma
