Deterministic chaos in the pitting phenomena of passivable alloys

Description

It was shown that electrochemical noise recorded in stable pitting conditions exhibits deterministic (even chaotic) features. The occurrence of deterministic behaviors depend on the material/solution severity. Thus, electrolyte composition ([Cl-]/[NO3-] ratio, pH), passive film thickness or alloy composition can change the deterministic features. Only one pit is sufficient to observe deterministic behaviors. The electrochemical noise signals are non-stationary, which is a hint of a change with time in the pit behavior (propagation speed or mean). Modifications of electrolyte composition reveals transitions between random and deterministic behaviors. Spontaneous transitions between deterministic behaviors of different features (bifurcation) are also evidenced. Such bifurcations enlighten various routes to chaos. The routes to chaos and the features of chaotic signals allow to suggest the modeling (continuous and discontinuous models are proposed) of the electrochemical mechanisms inside a pit, that describe quite well the experimental behaviors and the effect of the various parameters. The analysis of the chaotic behaviors of a pit leads to a better understanding of propagation mechanisms and give tools for pit monitoring. (author)

Abstract (French)

L'etude des signaux de bruit electrochimique a montre qu'ils presentaient des caracteristiques deterministes (parfois chaotiques) en presence de piqures propageantes. Les conditions d'apparition des comportements deterministes dependent de la severite du couple materiaux/solution. Ainsi, la composition de l'electrolyte (rapport [Cl-]/[NO3-], pH), l'epaisseur du film passif ou la composition de l'alliage permettent-ils de modifier les caracteristiques des comportements deterministes. La presence d'une seule piqure stable suffit a observer des comportements deterministes. Les signaux de bruit electrochimique sont non stationnaires, ce qui traduit une modification du comportement de la piqure (vitesse ou mode de propagation) au cours du temps. Par la modification de la composition de l'electrolyte, des transitions entre regimes aleatoires et deterministes sont mises en evidence. Des transitions spontanees entre regimes deterministes de caracteristiques differentes sont egalement observables (bifurcations). Ces bifurcations revelent differents modes d'apparition des comportements chaotiques. Les modes d'apparition du chaos observes, ainsi que les caracteristiques des signaux chaotiques offrent une base pour proposer des modelisations (modeles continus ou discrets) des phenomenes electrochimiques a l'interieur de la piqure, qui permettent de retrouver les comportements observes experimentalement ainsi que l'effet des differents parametres. L'analyse des comportements chaotiques d'une piqure permet de mieux comprendre les mecanismes de propagation d'une piqure et donne des outils pour controler le developpement des piqures stables.
