Improvement of heavy ion acceleration at the EhGP-10-1 tandem accelerator

  • 1. Zentralinstitut fuer Kernforschung, Rossendorf bei Dresden (German Democratic Republic)

Description

Trajectories of ions with different charge states in an accelerating tube with inclined fields of the EhGP-10-1 tandem accelerator have been calculated for the purpose of explaining the reasons of bending the ion axis with respect to the accelerating axis and improving the process of heavy ion acceleration. These calculations helped to improve the heavy ion beam transport with the aid of a beam corrector located immediately after a charge-exchange target. The maximum beam intensity behind an analyzing magnet has increased from 0.16 to 0.25 μA, and the long-time stability of the beam current has also improved. Difficulties arising in the process of the beam transport to the target have vanished. Now the conditions of heavy ion acceleration correspond to the conditions of proton acceleration
