Effect of AC electric field on the whistler mode instability in the magnetosphere
Description
This paper is a modeling study of whistler wave propagation in an infinite bi-Maxwellian magnetoplasma in the presence of an ac electric field. The authors derive the dispersion relations for the instability using a method of characteristic solutions. They determine the growth rate of the instability. They find that the ac field parameters modify the growth rate and resonance conditions for charged particles interacting with these waves. In the limit of zero ac field, their results reproduce earlier work on whistler instabilities
