Effect of x-ray irradiation on the dielectric properties and optical absorption of triglycerine sulphate single crystals
Description
The dielectric constant (K) and dissipation factor (tandelta) of single crystals of triglycine sulphate (TGS) have been measured as a function of frequency from 102 to 107 Hz and in the temperature range 30-80degC. Optical absorption at 30degC in the region 200-1000 mμ has also been measured on these samps. At 30degC, K decreases with frequency reaching a constant value of 33 around 105 Hz and tan delta also decreases gradually with frequency. X-ray irradiation reduces the frequency-dependent K value considerably but has no effect on its high-frequency value. The X-ray irradiated TGS crystal exhibits considerable reduction in tan delta especially at lower frequencies. These results suggest appreciable influence of space charge polarization in these samples. The value of K increases with temperature but decreases with frequency. X-ray irradiation reduces the K value at 102 Hz throughout the temperature region but not at 105 Hz. At any temperature, values of tan delta for X-ray irradiated TGS crystals are aower, both at 102 and 105 Hz, than those for the unirradiated samples. Ao X-ray irradiation reduces the peak K value at 102 Hz at the Curie temperature by about 30% and tan delta considerably reduced but has practically no effect on these quantities at 105 Hz. Optical absorption of these samples increases at lower wavelengths. X-ray irradiation increases the general absorption and apparently pushes up the cutoff wavelength. An attempt is made to interpret these results. (author)
