The present state of the disposal of sealed radioactive sources in South Africa

The law, The Atomic Energy Act, governing the import, use, conveyance and disposal of radioactive materials was first promulgated in South Africa in 1948 (Act 35 of 1948) and since that time all industrial sources (and in time medical sources) were strictly controlled. Permission had to be obtained for the import of all sources and registers of these sources were maintained. Regular inspections of the source sites were made and licenses were issued. (author)
