Study on some properties of KRS crystals in the 10-m spectral region

  • 1. AN SSSR, Moscow. Fizicheskij Inst.

Description

The purpose of the present work is to study the most important lasing characteristics of single crystals KRS-5 (TlBr-TlJ) and KRS-6 (TlBr-TlCl). The optical, thermal and mechanical characteristics of single crystals KRS have been investigated. The procedure used to measure the linear absorption coefficient lambda the ray stability to short radiation pulses at lambda=10. 6 μ has been described. Typical values of d at room temperature lie in the range (6-10) x 10-3 cm-1. The single crystals studied have been shown to have a good transmission over a wide region of IR-spectra. In studying the temperature dependence of the spectral transmission it has been established that in the temperature range from 20 to 200 deg C the transmission remains unchanged. In using the single crystals in the IR-region of the spectrum the material has been estimated as optically homogeneous. The thermal stability of the crystals KRS-5 has been found to depend significantly on their orientation. Single crystals KRS-5 and KRS-6 have satisfactory mechanical characteristics. The measurements of thresholds of the surface and bulk destruction of samples under the influence of both pulsed and continuous irradiation from CO2 lasers have shown that their material cracks where there are macroscopic defects. These investigations have indicated that thallium halogenides are promising materials for the laser technology in the 10-μ region of the spectrum
