Rare earth additions to electric furnace steels for sulfide shape control

Description
The effects of inclusion sulfide morphology on notch toughness of steels are examined. It was found that additions of Ti, Zr, and rare earths form sulfide inclusions that are globular instead of the stringer type usually found in hot rolled steels. This change in sulfide morphology improves the transverse notch toughness of the steel. (U.S.)
