Problems of radioiodine therapy of patients with hyperthyroidism

Description

Essential criterious of the delimination of the radioiodine treatment against thyreostatic and surgical tretment are the duration of the disease and the age of the patient. For the usual praxis to treat with radioiodine only patients older than 40 years there exists no objective reason. The doses applied in radioiodine treatment are very different. It might to expected that with better possibilities in differentiating between the different forms of hyperthyroidism there will be objective arguments for the different radiation doses used. The only risk of the radioiodine treatment is the induction of hypothyroidism. Therefore the indication for this treatment should be more extended than it is at the moment. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Wesentliche Kriterien bei der Abgrenzung der Radiojodbehandlung gegenueber der thyreostatischen und der chirurgischen Behandlung sind die Dauer der Erkrankung und das Alter der Patienten. Fuer die meistgeuebte Praxis, im wesentlichen nur Patienten, die aelter sind als 40 Jahre, mit Radiojod zu behandeln, gibt es eigentlich keine objektive Begruendung. Bei der Radiojodbehandlung werden relativ unterschiedliche Dosierungen angewendet, wobei zu erwarten ist, dass bei besserer Differenzierungsmoeglichkeit zwischen den verschiedenen diffusen Hyperthyreosen sich besser begruendbare Unterschiede in den Dosierungen ergeben. Das praktisch einzige Risiko bei Radiojodbehandlung ist die Hypothyreose. Daher sollte die Indikation fuer diese Therapie etwas weiter gefasst werden, als dies bisher der Fall ist. (orig.)
