Analysis of plutonium isotopic ratios in nuclear spent fuel

Description
The activity of plutonium isotopes produced in RBMK and PWR type nuclear reactors is calculated using the SCALE 4.4A package code ORIGEN-S. The selected activity ratios. of Pu isotopes can be measured using α-spectrometry as well as liquid scintillation spectrometry. A method to determine the amount of. the main Pu isotopes in the environmental samples and radioactive waste using the measurements of α- and β-activities and their theoretical evaluation is presented. The results of the spectrometric a-activity measurements and the total α- and β-activity measurements with the liquid scintillation spectrometer match the theoretical results obtained using SCALE 4.4A codes and measurements of activity of the reference material. It corroborates a good precision of the theoretical evaluation. (author)
