Description

The present characterization of the subsolar magnetopause as the interface between two magnetized thermal plasmas proceeds by conducting a variety of measurements for the cases in which the magnetic fields on both sides of the interface were parallel and antiparallel, or when the IMF was northward and southward. While in the parallel-field case the magnetopause was composed of a sheath transition layer and two boundary layers, separated by sharp boundaries, and with linearly polarized transverse waves near the ion gyrofrequencies in the sheath transition layer, the antiparallel field case was characterized by a magnetopause composed of a sheath transition layer and a boundary layer; both ion cyclotron waves and EM waves up to the electron gyrofrequency were present in the sheath-transition layer. 16 refs
