Increasing fracture during childhood

Description
Although calvarial fractures usually heal well in children, it may occur that interposition of dura and arachnoidea leads to an enlargement of the fracture line, and to formation of a leptomeningeal cyst accompanied by an arrosion of the bone. This defect of the skull cap is the so-called 'growing fracture of the vault of the cranium'. Clinical manifestation of this growing fracture is a swelling that occurs after some weeks on the skull. Diagnostic evaluation can be done by CT and X-ray radiography. (orig./GDG)
Abstract (German)
Heilt die Kalottenfraktur im Kindesalter normalerweise rasch, kommt es jedoch in seltenen Faellen durch die Interposition von Dura und Arachnoidea zu einer Verbreiterung des Frakturspalts und Ausbildung einer leptomeringealen Zyste mit Knochenarrosion. Dieser Defekt der Schaedelkalotte ist die sogenannte 'wachsende Schaedelfraktur'. Klinisch imponiert die wachsende Fraktur durch eine mehrere Wochen nach dem Trauma auftretende Schwellung im Schaedelbereich. Die diagnostische Abklaerung erfolgt durch den Einsatz der Computertomographie sowie der konventionellen Roentgendiagnostik. (orig./GDG)Additional details
