Confinement and saddle-point configurations

  • 1. Columbia Univ., New York, NY (United States). Dept. of Physics

Description

We discuss a procedure we call extremisation, which evolves a lattice configuration towards a (not necessarily stable) solution of the lattice field equations. We apply extremization to thermalized 3-dimensional SU(2) lattices and find non-trivial solutions, smooth on the scale of a lattice spacing, to the lattice field equations. We compare the extremized lattices with cooled lattices and discuss the effects of extremization on the string tension. (orig.)
