Description
The TBD Nuclear Material Disposition Program was initiated in 2018 by the NNSA Office of Nuclear Materials Integration to provide a coordinated effort across DOE program offices, sites, and national laboratories to identify, stimulate, and progress nuclear material disposition. The focus of this initiative is to develop DOE-wide strategies to address excess materials defined in the Nuclear Materials Inventory Assessment database as 'TBD' (i.e., no defined disposition path). One of the materials included in the TBD category is the set of Mk-42 targets stored at ORNL. The Mk-42 targets were included in the study because they would be difficult to disposition due to high actinide and cesium compositions and the potential lack of facilities to process the targets to meet the disposition criteria. This paper focuses on options for dispositioning the Mk-42 targets and similar materials within the context of the TBD study. (authors)
