On source term evaluation

  • 1. San Diego, CA

Description

An International Atomic Energy Agency Symposium on Source Term Evaluation for Accident Conditions was held at Battelle Columbus Laboratories (USA) from 28 October to 1 November 1985. Participation of specialists from twenty-nine countries, the Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD), Commission of the European Communities, and the American Nuclear Society, provided an excellent exchange of views on the current status of source term evaluations. Five specialized sessions covered in-vessel and ex-vessel release, transport and retention in the primary system and the containment, and release from the plant. Panel discussions covered containment challenges during postulated events, and regulatory implications of recent research. Apart from the invited papers, there were no individual presentations. The basic content and findings of papers were summarized by rapporteurs at each session. This innovative scheme stimulated discussions, and could be well adopted at future IAEA meetings. Part one of this paper presents highlights of the specialized sessions. Part one of this paper presents highlights of the specialized sessions. This is followed in part two by a discussion of the regulatory implications of the source term evaluations
