Carcinoma of body of uterus: a series from Saint Luke's Hospital, Dublin, 1977-1983

In this retrospective study of 96 patients with carcinoma of the body of the uterus, the mean age of patients was 61.8 years. Vaginal bleeding was the commonest presenting feature (78% cases). The mean duration of symptoms before presentation was 7.5 months, 68.75% of patients had Stage I, 4.16% Stage II, 11.45% Stage III and 6.25% Stage IV. Recurrent disease was present in 3% and 6.25% were unrecorded. Treatment consisted of surgery only in 5%, surgery plus radiotherapy in 79%, radiotherapy alone in 13.5% palliative, chemotherapy in 1%, and adjunctive chemotherapy was used in 34.9%. Overall survival figures are 79% patients alive and 23.95 deceased. The mean follow-up time was 2.7 years. The survival figures by stage were 86.37% for Stage I, 75% for Stage II, 54.55% for Stage III and 33.4% for Stage IV. (author)
