A model of three-dimensional field-line reconnection
Description
A reconnection model is presented in terms of drift currents. First, it is argued that the unperturbed neutral sheet current is maintained by a divergence-free pressure-gradient (diamagnetic) current. Induced curvature and gradient- B currents associated with a magnetic perturbation are then considered. It is found that if the perturbation is accompanied by plasma compression and spatially localized, the induced currents produce a polarization field which leads to a condition favorable to reconnection.
