Abstract Spectroscopic and photometric surveys by Eggen, Greenstein, and others have yielded almost no classical degenerates with Luyten color class redder than class g. Reduced-proper-motion diagrams made from Luyten's catalog and from a large number of photometrically observed objects show that Luyten's selection criterion will naturally yield a large proportion of subdwarfs and "Eggenites" among the red and yellow candidates. New selection criteria relating reduced proper motion and color class or B - V color index are proposed to distinguish classical degenerates from the mixed subdwarf-Eggenite sequences.
