The 14 GHz CAPRICE source: Results on heavy metallic ions

Description
For the new injector of the UNILAC accelerator, the GSI at Darmstadt requires an ion source able to produce at least 5μA of heavy metallic ions such as Au25+, Pb25+, and more specifically U28+, in a dc regime for at least 20 hours within ±20%. During the last two years a prototype has been studied, built and tested at 10 GHz and 14.5 GHz. Two methods of production of uranium ions are presented with their advantages and drawbacks. Other results for metallic and gaseous elements are also presented
