Because the increasing volume of data collected every year by the official monitoring offices would exceed the scope of an annual report, the BMU (German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Reactor Safety) as the responsible ministry decided to include in its official annual report 1996 on ambient radioactivity and radiation exposure of the population only a compact survey describing the situation in general, and leave it to the coordinating and control centers of the Federal Government responsible for ambient radioactivity monitoring to publish the relevant data in separate baseline data compilations. The documentation in hand, issued by the BfS (Federal Office for Radiation Protection), contains such data compilation covering the data measured in 1996 across the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany.
