Radioactivity releases from fuel elements stored in the KRB-A storage pool over prolonged periods of time

Description
The long time behaviour of the fuel elements with respect to radioactivity releases is of primary interest, both for reasons of plant operation and for the radiological consequences. The Gundremmingen KRB-A Nuclear Power Station was decommissioned on January 13, 1977. Afterwards, the whole reactor core was unloaded into the fuel element storage pool and has been kept there since, including defective rods. Since the beginning of the storage period, detailed analyses of the water of the fuel element storage pool have been conducted for specific radionuclides. In this way, the buildup of radioactivity in the water of the pool can be traced as a function of time which results from the releases of radioactivity from defective fuel elements. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Das Kernkraftwerk KRB-A wurde der gesamte Kern 1977 in das Brennelement-Lagerbecken entladen. Mit einem umfangreichen Messprogramm wurde der zeit- und temperatureabhaengige Aktivitaetsaufbau im Lagerbecken einerseits bei abgeschalteter Reinigungsanlage und andererseits bei zusaetzlich abgeschalteter Kuehlung ermittelt. Ausserdem wurden Aerosolmessungen ueber der Lagerbeckenmitte vorgenommen. Hauptaktivitaetstraeger waren die Radionuklide Cs-134, Cs-137 und Co-60. Die Messdauer ist die bisher laengste, die dieser Fragestellung gewidmet wurde. Die gefundenen Messwerte geben Aufschluss darueber, ob eine laengere Lagerung von Brennelementen auch mit defekten Brennstaeben moeglich ist, ohne die vorhandenen Reinigungssysteme zu ueberfordern.
