Anticipated radiation environmental effect from the Moscow Kaon Factory
- 1. Inst. for Nuclear Research, Moscow (Russian Federation)
Description
The radiation effects anticipated from Moscow Kaon Factory (the synchrotron with 45 Gev proton energy and 125 μA average current being designed now) have been evaluated by estimating effective dose equivalents which would be received by the public from radiation exposure attributable to the installation. Dose rate conversion factors of all radionuclides produced from air by high energy nucleons have been calculated for inhalation, ingestion and external exposure. Radioactivity emission rate and composition of released mixtures at different designs and modes of operation have been considered. The contribution of various radionuclides varies widely: the contribution of the short-lived radioactive gases C-11, N-13 - from 4% to 98%; the contribution of Ar-41 - from 2% to 60% and the contribution of other radionuclides Be-7, Na-22, Na-24, Al-28, P-32, S-37, Cl-38, Cl-39, etc. - from 4% to 80%. To evaluate the radiation environmental effect of releasing long-lived radionuclides Be-10, C-14, Al-26, Si-32, Cl-36, Ar-39, the ratios of their emission rates from the Kaon Factory to corresponding production rates in the atmosphere due to cosmic rays have been evaluated. It was shown that the ratios do not exceed 0.01%
