Liquid chromatographic studies on the retention behaviour of Pu(III), Pu(IV) and Pu(VI) in presence of Mandelic acid eluent

  • 1. Fuel Chemistry Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Liquid chromatographic separation of plutonium (Pu) oxidation states viz. Pu(III), Pu(IV) and Pu(VI) was investigated using mandelic acid as an eluent. Chromatographic parameters such as concentration of eluent, pH of the mobile phase and methanol content in the mobile phase etc. were studied using a monolith C18 stationary phase. Under low pH conditions, Pu(IV) showed more retention than Pu(VI) but the pattern was reversed at higher pH (>3.5) conditions. Based on these studies a mobile phase composition consisting of 0.15 M mandelic acid of pH 3 and 20% (v/v) methanol was used for the separation of Pu species. (author)
