3. safety review of the Gronau uranium enrichment plant

Uranium is enriched in the Gronau uranium enrichment plant (UAG) and thus nuclear fuel is produced. For this purpose, Urenco D has a plant licence according to § 7 of the Atomic Energy Act and, according to § 19a para. 3 of the Atomic Energy Act, must also carry out a safety review as another nuclear facility (just like nuclear power plants and, for example, Advanced Nuclear Fuels GmbH (ANF)). Therefore, every 10 years, Urenco Germany faces a mammoth task: the safety review of the UAG must be carried out. The safety review requires tens of workers, generates thousands of pages of paper and costs a seven-digit euro amount. This huge effort serves to prove that the necessary damage precautions are still in place.
