Limitations of heavy element production
Description
Several experiments on superheavy element production and decay performed at the UNILAC accelerator are reviewed. Measured values of alpha energies and alpha decay and fission halflives are used to establish trends for these quantities and comparisons with theoretical predictions of mass excesses, shell corrections and fission barriers are made. Limits to heavy element production are discussed and the outlook for the production of elements heavier than element 109 is considered
