Summary of amendment to regulation for enforcement of law concerning prevention of radiation hazards due to radioactive isotopes, etc

Work was carried out to modify the law Concerning Prevention of Radiation Hazards due to Radioactive Isotopes, etc., in line with the recommendations in the ICRP Publ. 26. Amendments to regulations to be enforced by the Science and Technology Agency has recently been completed and disclosed. A large number of amendments were made including those not related with the ICRP recommendations. The present report is focused on the amendments which affect the technical standards. The amendments cover the terminology for the technical standards, the units to be used (International System of Units), definition of personnel in charge of handling of radiations, establishment of dose equivalent limits for personnel handling radiations, evaluation of the effective dose equivalent and tissue dose equivalent (external and internal exposure), measurement of the human dose equivalent (external and internal exposure, surface contamination, records), establishment of dose equivalent limits in the controlled areas, measurement of the amount of radiations and contamination in various areas, concentration of radioactive isotopes in discharged air and water, etc. (Nogami, K.)
