Comparison of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), CT and MRI in clinical staging of prostatic cancer. Report of a six cases of radical prostatectomy

The purpose of this study was to compare preoperative value of transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in identifying prostatic cancer. The subjects were 6 patients with pathologically proven prostatic cancer. According to the clinical staging, 4 had stage B (T2N0M0) and 2 had stage C (T3N0M0). TRUS was higher sensitivity (83%) in determining T stages, as compared with both MRI and CT (66% each). MRI was useful in delineating the inside structure of the prostate, but was inferior due to its body coil in delineating neoplastic lesions. CT was incapable of detecting localization of neoplastic lesions in all patients due to its poor ability to delineate the inside structure of the prostate. (N.K.)
