Description
With respect to the harmonization of the safety of nuclear facilities the European Commission favors in the frame of the ''nuclear package'' a top-down approach including the adoption of the IAEA safety standards. WENRA (Western European nuclear regulators association) worked out a bottom-up approach for the safe operation of nuclear facilities based on the experience of their supervising practice, the assessment of the EU acceding countries and the IAEA Safety standards. In 2206 WENRA published their recommendations on reactor safety. The European operators used ENISS (European nuclear installations safety standards) to discuss the WNERA recommendations to include their information in order to develop reference levels and a benchmark process for implementation in the nuclear facilities.
