Description

The authors of this paper present microscopic background calculations for (p,n) reactions at intermediate energies which reproduce the 48Ca(p,n) continuum at 00 within an accuracy of 30%. This agreement between calculation and experiment shows that the background at high incident energies is dominantly made by direct processes only. The missing cross section might be due to two step processes, especially at higher excitation energies. Calculations for (p,n) show that the shape of the background below the Gamow-Teller resonance in 48Ca(p,n) is quite different from that drawn by experimentalists. A strong ΔL=2, 3+ resonance is found in 48Ca(p,n), but not in 40Ca(p,n). There are indications that the concentration of ΔL=2 strength depends on the neutron excess
