Crystal and local structure of hydrogen storage materials by neutron

  • 1. National Inst. of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Tsukuba, Ibaraki (Japan). Energy Technology Research Inst.

Description

There are three kinds of hydrogen storage materials consisted of the alloy type; intermetallic compounds such as LaNi5, TiFe and TiMn2 and solid solution alloy such as Ti-V-Cr, Ti-V-Mn and Ti-Cr-Mo, the complex type; NaAlH4 and LiBH4 and the carbon type; active carbon and carbon nano-tube. The experimental methods using neutron for the crystal structure and local structure of hydrogen storage materials are explained. The experiments were carried out in KENS, where the general neutron diffraction experiments are observed by Vega, in situ experiments by Sirius. Total diffraction was measured by HIT-II and the vibrational excitation spectrum of hydride by CAT. As the examples of researches, the crystal structure change of LaNi5 alloy hydride depending on absorption and emission of hydrogen, the crystal and local structure of Ti-V type BCC solid solution alloy hydride and the vibrational excitation spectrum of hydride of Ti-V-Mn alloy are shown.
