A comment on the common one-dimensional derivation of the van der Waals forces

Description
In many physical text-books a simple one-dimensional model is used to derive the characteristic 1/R7-dependence of the attractive van der Waals forces. We show that this calculation is wrong. The range forces in this simple model are not attractive but repulsive proportional to 1/R6. Only a three-dimensional calculation yields the correct behaviour. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
In vielen physikalischen Lehrbuechern wird ein einfaches ein-dimensionales Modell zur Ableitung der charakteristischen 1/R7-Abhaengigkeit der attraktiven van der Waals-Kraefte verwendet. Wie gezeigt wird, ist diese Rechnung falsch. Die langreichweitigen Kraefte dieses einfachen Modells sind nicht anziehend, sondern abstossend proportional zu 1/R6. Nur eine drei-dimensionale Behandlung fuehrt zum richtigen Verhalten. (orig.)Additional details
