  • 1. Nauchno-Issledovatel'skij Inst. Skoroj Pomoshchi, Moscow (USSR)

Description

The results of clinical and X-ray examination of 75 patients with esophageal perforation are presented. The procedure of urgent examination in suspected esophageal perforation, and X-ray signs confirming the diagnosis are described (direct signs: emphysema of the periesophageal tissues and contrast medium entry beyond the esophageal contour; indirect signs: infiltration of the periesophageal tissues and pleuropulmonary alterations). It is performed regularity in the postoperative period and includes straight radiography of the chest and neck area, contarst X-ray examination of the esophagus and mediastinum or a purulent cavity on the neck. Serial radiography makes it possible to judge the size of the cavity, its contact with the surrounding organs and tissues and the efficacy of drainage and the degree of adhe- sion of a perforation hole in the esophagus
