Recent activities at Inshas ion accelerators

  • 1. Nuclear Research Centre, Atomic Energy Authority, Cairo (Egypt)

Description

Full text: Research activities at the Inshas Cyclotron Facility (ICF) are outlined. ICF is a research and development utility comprising two ion accelerators: the MGC-20 cyclotron and the 4130 MC+ tandetron. The cyclotron accelerator, which is a k=20 positive ion AVF machine was commissioned in Oct. 2000. Currently the accelerator is engaged in experiments with cross-section measurements for nuclear physics research and radioisotope (RI) production, as well as in improving conditions for routine RI production of I-123 and Ga-67 radioisotopes for medical diagnosing. The tandetron accelerator, which is a dual ion source, 3 MV high voltage terminal Cockroft-Walton tandem machine, had passed the stage of installation and testing by the supplier (HVEE, The Netherlands) in mid 2006. The accelerator commissioning is expected during 2007. Rated/designed parameters of the two accelerators are given. Research programmes are outlined. Some of the recently measured cross-sections on isotopes of medical and technological relevance are presented
