Description

The model of focused transport takes into account the focusing of charged particles by the large scale interplanetary field as well as pitch angle scattering by small scale irregularities. It is applied to the solar event of 28 March 1976 as observed on HELIOS 2 to 0.5 AU. A numerical solution is used here which in contrast to previous work is not restricted to an exponentially widening field but can also treat any configuration (e.g. monopolar or Archimedean spiral). During this event scattering in the inner solar system turns out to be weak (mean free path lambda approximately 0.75AU). Comparison of observed and calculated pitch angle distributions does not allow to determine the amount of scattering close to 900 pitch angle, but it fixes the relative degree of scattering at large and small pitch angles
