Economic aspects of natural uranium production considering uranium conversion and the market structure in Russia

  • 1. VNIPI der Industriellen Technologie, Moscow (Russian Federation)

Description

In the uranium mining industry in Russia it was possible to maintain acceptable conditions despite the currently difficult economic situation, due to application of a new mining and metallurgical extraction method, which was combined with the pile and in situ leaching methods. The new technology also solves ecological problems, because it reduces the waste amounts to be stored at ultimate storage sites. The mineral reserves available in Russia permit to increase the annual output to 5000-6000 tonnes of uranium trioxide. The considerable investments required unfortunately endanger the price structure, and thus exports of natural uranium. (orig./CB)
