Mechanism of 4f-5d-hybridization in Sm1-xRxS (R = Ce, Gd, Y) systems with fluctuation valence

Description
In Sm1-xRxS (R = Ce, Gd, Y) systems with fluctuation valence (FV) one determined using method of shifts of X-ray lines the population of 4f-states (valence) of Sm, as well as, populations of 5d-states of Ce and Gd and 4d-states of Y. One detected that in all the systems after transition to FV state Sm valence increase from m ≅ 2.5 (0.15 < x < 0.25) up to m ≅ 2.65 (x ≅ 0.8) and then decreased. In that case, populations of d-states of Ce, Gd and Y remained practically stable within the whole range of compositions. The experimental dependence of Sm valence on composition is explained in the assumption that its 4f-electron is hybridized by two channels: with 5d-electron of neighboring Sm atom and with 5d-electron of eigenatom
Abstract (Russian)
В системах промежуточной валентности (ПВ) Sm1-xRxS (R = Ce, Gd, Y) методом смещений рентгеновских линий определена заселенность 4f-состояний (валентность) Sm, а также заселенности 5d-состояний Ce и Gd и 4d-состояний Y. Обнаружено, что во всех системах после перехода в состояние ПВ валентность Sm увеличивается от m ≅ 2.5 (0.15 < x < 0.25) до m ≅ 2.65 (x ≅ 0.8) и далее уменьшается. При этом заселенности d-состояний Ce, Gd и Y остаются практически неизменными во всей области составов. Экспериментальная зависимость валентности Sm от состава объяснена в предположении, что его 4f-электрон гибридизуется по двум каналам: с 5d-электроном соседнего атома Sm и с 5d-электроном собственного атомаAdditional details
