Synchrotron for acceleration of ions with variable charge

  • 1. Nauchno-Issledovatel'skij Inst. Ehlektrofizicheskoj Apparatury, Leningrad (USSR)

Description

Within the framework of autophasing and strong focusing principles in a synchrotron the acceleration of heavy ions with different charges is possible. A magnetic system, providing the ion accumulation regime with the aid of charge-exchange target placed into a synchrotron vacuum chamber, is suggested. Ion beam with a low charge passes through the charge-exchange target and after the completion of a cycle crosses the target again. In this case some ions change the sign, but ion distribution over the charge is maintained. The beam is stored in a separate injection ring. With 10 μkg/cm2 target thickness, which is necessary for establishing equilibrium distribution of 1 MeV/nucleon beam, multiturn injection (tens of turns) with approximately 100% efficiency is possible. After completing the storage process the accelerating voltage is switched on. The regime suggested permits to increase beam pulse intensity and to bring it up to the Coulomb level. Stripping during acceleration causes the increase of efficiency of ion interaction with electric and magnetic fields, with the result that specified energy of ions per nucleon is produced in a synchrotron with a smaller perimeter and by using a lower accelerating voltage
