Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) of 26Al - enhanced sensitivity with a gas-filled magnet
- 1. Australian National University, Canberra, ACT (Australia). Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, Department of Nuclear Physics
Description
Full text: AMS of 26AI has employed the atomic negative ion exclusively to date, because it eliminates the isobaric interference from 26Mg. Magnesium does not form a stable negative ion. The low output of Al- ions from negative ion sources has, however, inhibited wide application of 26AI in studies of landscape evolution. We report the use of a gas-filled magnet which separates 26AI from the intense flux of 26Mg ions after acceleration, and thereby enhances the sensitivity of 26AI AMS by an order of magnitude by allowing use of the factor of 20 more intense AIO- beam.
