Hafnium for the criticality safety in nuclear fuel processing

Description
Using hafnium as a heterogeneous neutron absorber in recycling plants was found to be superior to all other materials used previously. As an extremely corrosion-proof working material, it can be used in the dissolver, in the buffer tanks between the solution and the first extraction cycle and in the pulsed columns for extraction. Criticality calculations show that a safe design for a 235-U equivalent of 5% can be achieved by applying simple build-in parts made of hafnium into the relevant components of a 1500 jato plant. (RB)
Abstract (German)
Der Einsatz von Hafnium als heterogener Neutronenabsorber in Wiederaufarbeitungsanlagen erweist sich als allen bisher verwendeten Materialien ueberlegen. Als extrem korrosionsbestaendiger Werkstoff laesst es sich z.B. im Aufloeser, in den Puffertanks zwischen Aufloesung und erstem Extraktionszyklus und in den Pulskolonnen fuer die Extraktion verwenden. Kritikalitaetsberechnungen zeigen, dass eine sichere Auslegung fuer ein 235-U Aequivalent von 5% mit einfachen Einbauten aus Hafnium in die relevanten Komponenten einer 1500 jato Anlage erreicht werden kann.
