NuScale and Prodigy Clean (a Canadian company) have signed an agreement to develop a maritime nuclear power plant based on the SMR (small modular reactor) designed by NuScale. The economic impact of the construction of 2 EPR at Hinkley Point C has been assessed by EDF Energy: 3.2 billions pounds have already been spent in the southwest region and 1700 jobs will be created by the end of 2021. TerraPower plans to build a prototype of its Natrium concept on the site of an ancient coal-fired plant. The demonstrator will be composed of a 345 MWe sodium-cooled reactor and a storage system for the electricity produced by renewable energies. The Indian Point nuclear power plant in the US has been definitively shut-down under the pressure of environmental associations and the strong competition of gas-fired power plants. A recent public opinion poll shows that nuclear energy regains interest among the Japanese population. Mihama-3 is the tenth reactor in Japan to resume its electricity production since the Fukushima accident. On 1 June 2021 Framatome acquired the French company 'Valinox Nucleaire SAS' that produces seamless stainless steel tubes for nuclear industry. (A.C.)
