Applications of ''SSNTD'' to radiation dosimetry
Description
Applications of Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors (SSNTD) in radiation dosimetry are discussed in detail. Importance gained by SSNTD is due to easy availability of track recording materials and etchants, stability of the recorded tracks and choice of track development and counting techniques. Dosimetric applications of track registration technique such as employing (n,f) reaction and (n,α) reaction are explained. Passive radon dosimeter developed at University of San Francisco which incorporates improvements over the existing dosimeters, is described. Detection of fast neutrons by recoil atom tracks, registration of proton tracks and detection of neutrons with E>>10MeV by multiprong tracks are explained. Radiation dose rates encountered in space, and radiation hazards due to galactic radiation, irradiation in radiation belts, solar flares, heavy ions etc. are described. Alternate methods of track development and counting are suggested. (B.G.W.)
