Study of CP violation with charmonium-k*(892) channels by a full-angular time-dependent analysis (BaBar experiment)
Description
This thesis presents the full-angular time-dependent analysis of the vector-vector channel B0d → J/ψ(Ks0π0)*0. After a review of the CP violation in the B meson system, the phenomenology of the charmonium-K*(892) channels is exposed. The method for the measurement of the transversity amplitudes of the B → J/ψK*(892), based on a pseudo-likelihood method, is then exposed. The results from a 81.9 fb-1 of collected data by the BABAR detector at the Υ(4S) resonance peak are |A0|2 = 0.565 ± 0.011 ± 0.004, |A(parallel)|2 = 0.206 ± 0.016 ± 0.007, |A(perpendicular)|2 = 0.228 ± 0.016 ± 0.007, δ(parallel) = - 2.766 ± 0.105 ± 0.040 and δ(perpendicular) = 2.935 ± 0.067 ± 0.040. Note that (δ(parallel),δ(perpendicular)) → (-δ(parallel), π - δ(perpendicular)) is also a solution. The strong phases δ(parallel) and δ(perpendicular) are at ∼≥ 3σ from ±π, signing the presence of final state interactions and the breakdown of the factorization hypothesis. The forward-backward analysis of the Kπ mass spectrum revealed the presence of a coherent S-wave interfering with the K*(892). It is the first evidence of this wave in the Kπ system coming from a B meson. The particularity of the B0d → J/ψ(Ks0π0)*0 channel is to have a time-dependent but also an angular distribution which allows to measure sin(2β) but also cos(2β). The results from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit are sin(2β) = -0.10 ± 0.57 ± 0.14 and cos(2β) = 3.32-0.96+0.76 ± 0.27 with the transversity amplitudes fixed to the values given above. The other solution for the strong phases flips the sign of cos(2β). Theoretical considerations based on the s-quark helicity conservation favor the choice of the strong phases given above, leading to a positive sign for cos(2β). This sign of cos(2β) is the one predicted by the Standard Model. (author)

Les travaux presentes dans cette these decrivent l'analyse angulaire complete dependante du temps du canal vecteur-vecteur B0d → J/ψ(Ks0π0)*0. Apres un rappel consacre a la violation de CP dans le systeme des mesons B est traitee la phenomenologie des canaux vecteur-vecteur du type charmonium-K*(892). La methode pour la mesure des amplitudes de transversite des canaux B → J/ψK*(892), basee sur l'utilisation d'un pseudo-maximum de vraisemblance, est ensuite exposee. Les resultats obtenus avec 81.9 fb-1 de donnees collectees par le detecteur BABAR au pic de la resonance Υ(4S) sont |A0|2 = 0.565 ± 0.011 ± 0.004, |A(parallele)|2 = 0.206 ± 0.016 ± 0.007, |A(perpendiculaire)|2 = 0.228 ± 0.016 ± 0.007, δ(parallele) = - 2.766 ± 0.105 ± 0.040 et δ(perpendiculaire) = 2.935 ± 0.067 ± 0.040. A noter que (δ(parallele),δ(perpendiculaire)) → (-δ(parallele), π - δ(perpendiculaire)) est aussi une solution. Les phases fortes δ(parallele) et δ(perpendiculaire) sont a ∼≥ 3σ de ±π, signant ainsi la presence d'interactions dans l'etat final et la rupture de l'approximation de factorisation. L'analyse de l'asymetrie avant-arriere en fonction de la masse Kπ a revele la presence d'une onde S coherente qui interfere avec le K*(892). C'est la premiere mise en evidence de la presence de cette onde dans le systeme Kπ provenant de la desintegration d'un meson B. La particularite du canal B0d → J/ψ(Ks0π0)*0 est d'avoir une distribution qui depend de la difference des temps propres Δt des deux mesons B provenant de la desintegration Υ(4S) → Bd0B-bard0 mais aussi des trois angles de transversite, permettant de mesurer sin(2β) mais aussi cos(2β). Les resultats obtenus avec un ajustement par maximum de vraisemblance sont sin(2β) = -0.10 ± 0.57 ± 0.14 et cos(2β) = 3.32-0.96+0.76 ± 0.27 avec les amplitudes de transversite fixees aux valeurs precedentes. L'autre solution pour les phases fortes conduit a la meme valeur de sin(2β) mais change le signe de cos(2β). Des considerations theoriques basees sur la conservation de l'helicite du quark s favorisent le choix des phases fortes donnees ci-dessus conduisant au signe positif pour cos(2β). Ce signe de cos(2β) est celui predit par le Modele Standard. (auteur)Files
