Efficacy of ultrasound-guided biopsy of peripheral lung lesions

Description

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of percutaneous ultrasound (US)-guided biopsy of peripheral lung lesions. Methods: 37 patients with 37 peripheral lung lesions underwent biopsy with US guidance from June 2014 to July 2015. The number of biopsy needles and duration of the procedure were recorded. The positive rate and the efficiency of biopsy were assessed. Results: Biopsy was successfully performed with no complications on all patients. Using 1 to 4 punctures (mean: 2.27 ± 0.73) and duration of 5-12 minutes (mean: 7.7 ± 2.0 minutes), the positive rate, diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value and accuracy of biopsy in lung carcinoma were 91.9% (34/37), 93.1% (27/29), 100% (8/8), 80.0% (8/10), and 94.6% (35/37), respectively. Conclusion: US-guided percutaneous lung biopsy is precise, easily controlled, safe and fast procedure with high positive rate. (authors)
