Rapid climatic variability in the North Atlantic ocean during the last 128,000 years: relations between ice sheets and oceanic surface water
Description
The slow variations of the terrestrial climate on time scales of several tens of thousands of years are essentially due to causes outside the terrestrial climatic system. Recently, some studies on ice and oceanic cores have shown that climatic changes can occur abruptly, on time scales of some centuries or some decades only. The aim of this work is the study of the rapid climatic variability in the North Atlantic during the last climatic cycle (128,000 years). The results are obtained both from continuous analyses of sediment cores (color changes and magnetic susceptibility) and isotopic geochemical methods. The continuous study of different parameters shows relationships between atmospheric (ice cores) and oceanic records (marine cores). The rapid climatic variations found in the ice are also recorded in the marine sediment. Bioturbation does not remove completely this high frequency signal. The detailed study of marine sediment shows that massive discharges of icebergs occurred several times during the last glacial period between 60 and 10 ka. As a result, the North Atlantic underwent huge hydrological changes during this time. Finally, the high resolution study of the last interglacial period between 128 and 113 ka shows a relative stability of the climate. (author)
Abstract (French)
Les variations lentes du climat de notre planete a l'echelle des derniers milliers d'annees sont essentiellement dues a des causes externes au systeme climatique terrestre. Or, des etudes recentes effectuees sur des carottes de glace et de sediment marin ont montre que les changements climatiques pouvaient se produire de maniere brutale en quelques centaines a quelques dizaines d'annees seulement. Dans cette optique, ce travail a eu pour but d'etudier la variabilite climatique rapide dans l'Atlantique Nord au cours du dernier cycle climatique (soit environ 128 000 ans). Les resultats ont ete obtenus a la fois a partir de methodes d'analyse en continu des sediments marins (variations de la couleur du sediment et susceptibilite magnetique) et de methodes plus classiques de geochimie isotopique. L'etude simultanee de ces differents parametres a permis de mettre en relation les enregistrements atmospherique (carottes de glace) et oceanique (carottes sedimentaires). Nous avons ainsi montre que les variations climatiques rapides enregistrees dans les glaces existent aussi dans les sediments marins et que la bioturbation ne detruit pas completement la variabilite haute frequence liee au climat. L'etude detaillee des sediments marins a permis de montrer que des episodes de debacles massives d'icebergs ont existe au cours de la derniere periode glaciaire, entre 60 et 10 ka, entrainant une importante variabilite hydrologique dans l'Atlantique Nord. Enfin, l'etude de la derniere periode chaude entre 128 et 113 ka a revele une relative stabilite des conditions climatiques lors de cette periode. (auteur)Files
