Description

The energy loss of carbon ions in carbon has been determined from an analysis of the Doppler-broadened line shape of the 12C 4.439-MeV gamma ray. The state was excited in the 12C(α,α')12C* reaction with 10-20-MeV and 21.60-MeV 4He beams, and the line shapes were obtained from γ-spectra collected in coincidence with backscattered α-particles. The present measurements, together with previous data, show that for velocities up to 3υB (υB is the Bohr velocity) the energy loss values are in good agreement with the extrapolated curve of Northcliffe and Schilling. At higher velocities the rate of energy loss decreases to just below the Ziegler estimates
